To learn how to do a voiceover on TikTok, record or upload your video, open the editor, tap Voice on the side panel, tap Record, tap the record button, tap Done, then tap Save. That is 6 taps once you are in the editor, and it works on a video from your camera roll.
The catch is time. A voiceover is a second recording pass on top of filming, and TikTok's tool can't delete one bad segment. If you film to camera, you may not need the pass at all. Upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, no card, at this site's editor.
The steps below follow TikTok's Help Center as quoted by Outfeed and checked on 7 Oct 2026. TikTok's own support pages blocked direct fetching, so run through the steps once on your phone before you rely on them. Button names change.
How to do a voiceover on TikTok, step by step
Get into the editor
- Tap Add post + and record, or tap Upload, pick a video from your camera roll and tap Next.
- Tap Edit on the side panel. You may need to tap the Continue ✓ button first.
Record the voiceover
- Tap Voice on the side panel.
- Tap Record at the bottom.
- Tap the record button and speak.
- Tap Done.
- Pick a voice effect if you want one. Skip this step to keep your own voice.
- Tap Save at the top.

The button label moves
Older guides show a microphone icon labeled "Recording" and an "Original sound" volume toggle. Other guides call it "Voiceover" or "Audio Editing". Epidemic Sound says the name varies by territory. Look for the microphone or the word Voice.
Place the narration
Drag the timeline marker to where the narration should start, then record. You can record several segments at different points in the video. They can't overlap (Epidemic Sound, Filmora).
Keep or replace the original sound
Guides describe an option to keep the clip's original sound or replace it with your recording (Filmora, Epidemic Sound, Serve Me the Sky). On a talking-head video, muting the original also mutes your on-camera voice. Choose on purpose.
Add the music first, your voice last
TikTok allows one sound per post. Per Outfeed's citation of the Help Center Sounds article, changing the music replaces all previous background music and voices. So:
- Pick the sound first.
- Record your voice last.
- Play the whole video back before you post.
Fix a mistake
Per Epidemic Sound, the X next to Record removes your voiceover. If you recorded two segments, it removes both. You can't delete one. A fumbled line in the last segment means recording the whole pass again. The next section prices that.
Add a voice effect
After recording, or from Voice on the editing screen, tap an effect to preview it. The Help Center doesn't name them. Epidemic Sound lists examples such as Giant, Jessie, Megaphone and Robot, but names can change.
Save a draft
Tap Drafts on the Post page to save your edit. Drafts stay on that device and account. Per Outfeed's citation of the Help Center, you can lose them if you reinstall TikTok or switch phones.
Voiceover on a computer
TikTok documents voiceover only for the app. A web upload sends the finished video, and the TikTok Studio web settings don't include voiceover (Outfeed, checked 7 Oct 2026). Record in the app, or put the narration into the file before you upload.
If the Voice button is missing
Filmora lists these fixes, in this order:
- Upload a plain video. The button can disappear on some templates, effects and duets.
- Turn on microphone permission in your phone settings and restart TikTok.
- Update TikTok.
- Lower the original audio or turn on keep original sound if the editor won't take a voice layer.
Text-to-speech is a different tool
Tap Text on the side panel, type, tap your text, then choose Text-to-speech. That reads typed words in a synthetic voice. It doesn't record you (Outfeed, Filmora, Epidemic Sound).
Record cleaner
Serve Me the Sky suggests no gear. Know your key points before you record (no formal script), speak clearly at a moderate pace, keep a sensible distance from the mic, aim for one take, and add captions with TikTok's built-in tool before posting.
Worked example: what a voiceover pass costs in a week
Take 3 product videos a day, 5 days a week. That is 15 videos. Every number below is an example. Swap in your own after timing a few videos with your phone's stopwatch.
Assume a voiceover pass has 4 segments and takes 4 minutes when nothing goes wrong. Assume 5 of the 15 passes hit a fumbled line, and because the X deletes every segment, each one is recorded again from the start. Assume hand-trimming one talking-head take, cutting pauses and retakes, takes 8 minutes.
| Item | Example number | Per week |
|---|---|---|
| Videos | 3 a day, 5 days | 15 |
| Voiceover pass, first try | 4 min each | 60 min |
| Passes recorded again from the start | 5 of 15, 4 min each | 20 min |
| Voiceover total | 80 min | |
| Hand-trim talking-head takes | 8 min each | 120 min |
Hand-trimming 15 takes at 8 minutes is 2 hours a week, before you post anything. For a first look at what that work involves on a phone, see how to edit videos on iPhone.
If you would rather not spend that time trimming, you can upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, no card, through this site's editor. The editor cuts pauses, filler words such as "um", retakes, and spoken "Clip N" slates.
Set the minutes against one $30 product
No TikTok Shop commission rate was checked for this article, so the rate below is a placeholder. Replace it with the rate shown on your own product listing.
- Placeholder commission rate: 10%. On a $30 product, that is $3 a sale.
- Placeholder value of your time: $15 an hour, or $0.25 a minute.
- 80 minutes of voiceover work is $20 of your time. At $3 a sale, that is 7 sales just to cover the time.
- 120 minutes of hand-trimming is $30 of your time. That is 10 sales.
These are example numbers. They promise no views or sales.
Which one to use
Use voiceover when the footage can't carry the explanation: B-roll, a demo shot with your hands only, a screen recording, a package opening where you'd rather not talk over the noise. The second pass is worth its minutes there because the video has no speaking track.
Use a straight talking-head take, cleaned up, when you already speak to camera and explain the product in the take. A voiceover on top of that adds a second recording for words you already said. The cost is the trimming, which is the 8 minutes per take in the example.
A quick test with a stopwatch:
- Time one voiceover pass, including any redo.
- Time one hand trim of a talking-head take.
- Multiply each by your weekly video count.
- Compare both totals with the commission on one sale at your own rate.
If you pick the talking-head route, the editor does not add captions, music, b-roll, effects or transitions. You still add those in TikTok. For other trimming options, see CapCut alternative for TikTok Shop talking-head videos.
