The short answer on how to make money on tiktok: you either qualify for paid features inside the app (Creator Rewards, LIVE Gifts, Series, TikTok Shop affiliate commissions) or you take deals outside it (brand and UGC deals, outside affiliate links, your own products). For talking-head product videos, TikTok Shop affiliate has the lowest bar in the US: 1,000 followers to self-apply, with the commission rate set by the seller.
If hand-trimming every take is what slows your posting, upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, no card needed.
Below: what each route requires, the Shop affiliate rules that cap how much you can post, and a worked example with one $30 product. Every TikTok rule here was checked on 2026-10-22 against the TikTok Shop Academy Creator Eligibility Policy (US, dated 09/25/2026) or against the named guide.
The routes and what each one requires
Sources: Finder, Hootsuite and the official policy for Shop affiliate. The guides disagree on some thresholds, so confirm in your own app before you plan around a number.
| Route | What it asks for | How you are paid |
|---|---|---|
| Creator Rewards | Personal account, 18+, at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days. Original videos at least 1 minute long. | Per qualified view. Reported estimates run about $0.40 to $1 per 1,000 qualified views. TikTok publishes no fixed rate. |
| TikTok Shop affiliate (US) | Self-apply, at least 1,000 followers, 18+, US-based, identity verification. | Commission on each kept order, rate set by the seller. |
| LIVE Gifts | 18+. Finder says roughly 1,000 followers to open LIVE. Hootsuite lists 10,000 followers for video and LIVE gifts, with exceptions. | Viewers send gifts that convert to diamonds. Hootsuite puts a diamond at about $0.005, so 200 diamonds is $1. TikTok's cut is unpublished and estimated at about 50%. |
| TikTok Series | 18+, 10,000 followers (or proof of prior paid content), 3 public videos and 1,000 views in 30 days. | You price a series from $0.99 to $189.99, up to 80 videos. Paid on the 15th once the balance reaches $50 (Finder). |
| UGC deals | No follower minimum. Brands pay for video made for the brand's own account, judged on content quality (Hootsuite). | Paid by the brand, on the terms you agree. |
| Outside affiliate links, own products | None set by TikTok. | Whatever the other platform or your own store pays. |
Creator Rewards and Shop affiliate are separate systems
Creator Rewards does not pay on sponsored content, according to Creators Agency. Duets, Stitches and photo-mode posts do not count either, and videos under 1 minute earn nothing from the program (Finder).
A typical product clip is short and carries a product link. Plan for it to earn through commission only.
Shop affiliate rules you need to know before you post
All of these are from the official Creator Eligibility Policy unless a line names another source.
To join as an Affiliate Creator in the US:
- Self-apply with at least 1,000 followers.
- Be 18 or older and based in the US.
- Pass Creator Identity Verification.
- Have no prior e-commerce permission revocation.
- Follow the Shop Content Policy, Community Guidelines and Creator Code of Conduct.
Under 1,000 followers: a seller can bind you as an Official Shop Creator or Marketing Creator, and those binds have no minimum follower count. An Official Shop Creator can only promote the bound shop.
Under 5,000 followers, the Affiliate Creator Pilot Program applies:
- You are enrolled for at least 30 days.
- You can promote only products with a Shop Performance Score of 95% or higher.
- You can post up to 3 shoppable videos per day and 3 shoppable LIVEs per week.
- You cannot join campaigns.
- Extended Pilot Creators get stricter limits: 3 shoppable videos per week and 1 LIVE per week.
- Graduation takes 5,000 followers plus 30 days.
Early graduation: pass the probation quiz, reach 176 or more Creator Health Rating points, and meet one of these: publish 6 or more shoppable videos of at least 8 seconds, do 1 LIVE of at least 5 minutes promoting products, or generate 10 orders through shoppable content.
Account-wide limit: since May 11, 2026, US accounts can post up to 30 shoppable short videos and 60 shoppable photo posts per day.
Quota counting: per brandID (October 2026), deleted, private, scheduled and violation-removed shoppable videos all count against the pilot quota. Drafts and videos with no product link do not. Check a take before you post it, because re-posting uses a second slot.
How to apply on your phone today
Steps from brandID and Creators Agency:
- Open your Profile, then TikTok Studio, then Monetization.
- Tap TikTok Shop for Creator, then Join now.
- Complete the age confirmation. Per those guides you have 2 months and up to 15 attempts.
- Complete identity verification when prompted.
- Set up the commission account, including tax info, before your first sale.
Worked example: one $30 product under the pilot cap
These numbers are your own task: the commission per order, the posting cap, the payout lag and the hand-trim time. I am not projecting sales or income. Nobody can tell you how many orders a video will get.
Step 1: commission per kept order
TikTok's formula, as Finder describes it, is the commission rate times the item price after the seller discount and any TikTok Shop discount. Refunded orders come back out.
- $30 product, 15% commission, no discounts: 0.15 × $30 = $4.50 per kept order.
- Same product with a $3 seller discount and a $2 Shop discount: 0.15 × ($30 − $3 − $2) = 0.15 × $25 = $3.75 per kept order.
- A returned order pays nothing. The Creators Agency example is 40 units × $50 × 15% = $300 gross, which falls to $225 after 10 returns.
The seller sets the rate. Finder and Hootsuite say 5% to 30% is common. brandID cites a marketplace average around 13%.
Step 2: the posting cap
Under 5,000 followers in the standard pilot: 3 shoppable videos a day × 7 days = 21 shoppable videos a week. Deleted and private shoppable videos still count. If you are in the Extended Pilot, the cap is 3 a week.
Step 3: the payout lag
Per Finder, commission settles about 15 days after delivery for established sellers and up to 31 days for newer ones. An order delivered on November 1 would settle between November 16 and December 2. brandID says refunds are clawed back and the first payout usually lands in month two.
Step 4: the hand-trim time
How long it takes you to trim one take by hand is your number. I am assuming 20 minutes per take as a placeholder. Replace it with your own.
| Minutes per take (assumption) | Videos per week | Weekly editing time |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 21 | 210 minutes, 3.5 hours |
| 20 | 21 | 420 minutes, 7 hours |
| 30 | 21 | 630 minutes, 10.5 hours |
Step 5: what is fixed and what you control
The commission per kept order is fixed by the seller. The cap of 21 videos a week is fixed by TikTok. The payout lag is fixed by the delivery and return window. The one lever left is how many usable takes you film and get posted inside the cap. At 20 minutes a take, those 21 slots cost you 7 hours a week of trimming before you count filming.
If that editing time is the part you would hand off, upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, with no card.
What the editor does and does not do
You upload one raw take from your phone's camera roll or your computer, and get back a cut clip. The editor cuts pauses, filler words such as "um", retakes, and spoken "Clip N" slates. A take can be up to 5 minutes long and up to 2 GB.
It does not add captions, music, b-roll, effects or transitions. If your videos need those, add them in your usual app. Uploaded videos are deleted 7 days after upload and finished clips 30 days after they are made, so download your clips. After the first clip, plans are monthly and listed on the pricing page.
What to film so the cap is worth using
- Answer a buyer question: a problem demo, a comparison, a setup, a stress test or an objection. "TikTok made me buy it" is the weak version (Creators Agency).
- Pick products in the $15 to $50 range that show their result within 5 seconds. Stay with 5 to 8 products in one niche, and only products you have used (brandID).
- Disclose paid and affiliate content. The FTC requires it whatever TikTok's rules say.
- Avoid AB-frame or deceptive edits that hide violating content. brandID reports they can cost you e-commerce permissions.
- Treat all TikTok income as taxable.
Off-platform income with no follower minimum
UGC deals pay you to make videos for a brand's own account, and pay is based on content quality (Hootsuite). The same talking-head takes work for a pitch. Creator Marketplace and TikTok One discoverability needs 10,000 followers, 1,000 post views and 3 posts in 30 days (Finder), so below that you pitch brands directly.

Before you post tomorrow
Count your shoppable posts for the day before you hit publish, and check each take for a flub first. A deleted or private shoppable video still uses one of your 3 daily slots. When you are ready to stop trimming by hand, upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, no card needed.
