The short answer on how to become a ugc creator is to film 3–5 sample talking-head videos on your phone with products you already own, put them in a portfolio, and pitch brands or UGC platforms. A UGC creator is paid per video or photo for content a brand uses in its own ads and channels, so you can start with a portfolio and no audience.
If you would rather film than trim, upload a raw take and get your first clip cut free, no card needed.
This article covers the two routes people mix up, the rules for TikTok Shop affiliates, what to film this week, and a worked example with the maths on your own schedule.
Two routes: paid UGC and TikTok Shop affiliate
These pay in different ways. Many creators do both.
Paid UGC. A brand pays you a flat fee per video. You hand over the file and the brand posts it from its own account or runs it as an ad. The UGC Agency says many of its top creators have under 1,000 followers (source, checked 2026-10-22). Influee answers the follower question with "None!" (source, checked 2026-10-22).
TikTok Shop affiliate. You post a video with a product link and earn a commission on sales attributed to you. The seller sets the rate. Nobody guarantees samples, distribution or income.
TikTok Shop affiliate rules in the US
These come from the TikTok Shop Academy Creator Eligibility Policy, dated 09/25/2026 and checked 2026-10-22. Check the page again before you apply, because policies change.
- You self-apply.
- You need at least 1,000 followers, must be at least 18, and must be based in the US.
- You pass Creator Identity Verification and have no prior e-commerce revocation.
- Official Shop and Marketing creators bound by a seller have no follower minimum.
The Affiliate Creator Pilot Program
Under 5,000 followers, you are auto-enrolled for at least 30 days. During the pilot:
- You can post up to 3 shoppable product videos a day.
- You can run up to 3 shoppable LIVEs a week. The TikTok LIVE steps and affiliate week cover that side.
- You can promote only products with a Shop Performance Score of 95% or higher.
- You cannot join campaigns.
You graduate at 5,000 followers plus 30 days. Early graduation is at TikTok's discretion. You pass the probation quiz, reach 176 or more Creator Health Rating points, and do one of these: 6 or more shoppable videos of at least 8 seconds, 1 LIVE of 5 minutes or more, or 10 orders.
Separately, since May 11, 2026 the US account-wide cap is 30 shoppable short videos and 60 shoppable photo posts a day, per TikTok Shop Academy (same source, checked 2026-10-22). Creators Agency cautions against treating a limit as a target (source, checked 2026-10-22).
How to become a ugc creator: steps for your phone today
- Pick 1–3 niches. Xolo suggests narrowing down early (source). Choose categories where you already own products: skincare, kitchen, pet, fitness.
- Set up 1–2 accounts. Use TikTok, Instagram or both. Put "I create UGC" in the bio with a portfolio link (Influee's advice).
- Film 3–5 mock videos in different formats. NearStream suggests a demo, a testimonial and an unboxing (source). The UGC Agency's application asks for 2–3 short samples. Practise with 30-second talking-head clips.
- Use basic gear. The UGC Agency lists an iPhone 11 or newer, or an equivalent Android, window light or a ring light, and the ability to follow a brief. It says a phone mic is fine for most briefs.
- Build the portfolio. Put the files in a public Google Drive folder named "[Your Name] UGC Portfolio" and link it in your bio.
- Pitch. Send the link to brands you already buy from and sign up to UGC platforms.
Worked example: a beginner's first 30 days in numbers
Rival guides stop at the steps. Here is the arithmetic on a pilot month. Treat every rate below as an example or a dated third-party figure.
1. How many takes you will film
The pilot cap is 3 shoppable videos a day for at least 30 days.
| Item | Number |
|---|---|
| Shoppable videos per day (pilot cap) | 3 |
| Days (pilot minimum) | 30 |
| Maximum shoppable videos | 3 × 30 = 90 |
Each of the 90 is a raw take you have to trim. You do not have to post the maximum, but this is the ceiling.
2. What a $30 product pays on commission
Gross commission = price × rate × kept orders. Sellers set the rate. The 15% below is an example rate, picked because Creators Agency uses 15% in its own example. Your product's rate may be higher or lower.
| Case | Maths | Commission |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kept order | $30 × 15% | $4.50 |
| 10 kept orders | 10 × $4.50 | $45 |
| 40 sold, 10 returned (30 kept) | 30 × $4.50 | $135 |
The last row follows Creators Agency's example of 40 sold and 10 returned. Their version used a $50 product: $300 before returns, $225 after (source, verified July 2026). Returns cut the total.
3. Compare with one flat UGC fee
Xolo (January 2026) lists $50–$250 per piece at entry level. Influee (February 2026) lists £50–£150 for beginners. Take the Xolo range against the example commission:
- A $50 fee equals about 11 kept orders at $4.50 each ($50 ÷ $4.50 = 11.1).
- A $250 fee equals about 56 kept orders ($250 ÷ $4.50 = 55.6).
One paid video and one affiliate video are different bets. The fee arrives whatever sells. The commission depends on orders that stay kept.
4. Your trimming time
No source gives a per-take figure, so time yourself. Trim one take by hand with your normal app, start the stopwatch at import and stop at export. Then multiply.
Daily trim time = minutes per take × takes per day.
As an assumption only: if a take takes you 10 minutes to trim, 3 a day is 30 minutes a day. Over a 30-day pilot that is 90 takes × 10 minutes = 900 minutes, or 15 hours. If your number is 6 or 15 minutes, redo the sum.
If those hours look like the part you would drop, upload a raw take and the first clip is cut free, no card required.
What to charge
Rates vary by source. Each figure below is attributed and dated.
| Source | Date | Beginner | Higher |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xolo | Jan 2026 | $50–$250 per piece | $300–$500+ established |
| Influee | Feb 2026 | £50–£150 | £500+ experienced |
| NearStream | Updated Mar 2026 | $100–$250 | $300–$500 intermediate |
| The UGC Agency | Checked 2026-10-22 | Typically $100–$500+ per video |
Xolo also cites a 2024 survey with an average of about $212 per 15–60 second video. NearStream's sample rate card is $150 for 1 video and $275 for 2. Influence4You says it may take 5–10 submitted videos before the first €300 (source, checked 2026-10-22).
How much editing brands expect
NearStream says brands want raw-feeling, snackable content. Its basics are cutting dead space and filler, with optional captions and light colour or audio fixes, and a warning against over-editing. NearStream and Influence4You name CapCut and Descript as tools for this. The CapCut alternative comparison covers options for talking-head work.
This site's editor does one part of that list. You upload one raw take from your phone's camera roll or your computer. It cuts pauses, filler words such as "um", retakes, and spoken "Clip N" slates. It does not add captions, music, b-roll, effects or transitions.
Where to find work
- UGC platforms: Billo, JoinBrands, Trend.io, Influee, Insense and Collabstr are named across the sources.
- Freelance sites: Fiverr and Upwork.
- Cold DMs and emails to brands you already use.
- Product-for-content deals early on, while the portfolio is thin.
For the affiliate side, TikTok Creator Rewards for Shop affiliates has another worked example.
Business basics
- Use a contract for every paid job.
- Charge extra for paid-ad usage rights.
- Invoice by PayPal, Stripe or bank transfer.
- Most brands prefer creators aged 18 or older (Influee).
- Label sponsored posts with "Paid Partnership" or the commercial disclosure label (Influence4You). Creators Agency points to FTC guidance.
Your next 30 minutes
Film one 30-second talking-head clip of a product you own. Time how long the hand trim takes, and write the number down. Then upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, no card.
