To learn how to edit tiktok videos on your phone, open TikTok, tap +, upload your take from the camera roll, open Edit or Adjust Clips (the scissors), and drag the start and end handles to trim. For a mistake in the middle, use Split, select the bad piece, delete it, then add text or captions, preview the whole video and post (steps per Hollyland, Apr 9, 2026, Async and Buffer).
If you would rather skip the trimming, upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, no card.
TikTok's built-in editor is enough for a talking-head video. The slow part is cutting every pause, stumble and retake by hand, once per mistake. The rest of this page gives the steps, then prices that job against a $30 sale.
How to edit tiktok videos: cut a talking-head take in TikTok's editor
Button names shift between app versions, so look for the scissors icon if "Adjust Clips" is labeled differently on your phone.
- Tap + at the bottom of TikTok. Tap Upload to pick a take from your camera roll, or record inside the app.
- Tap Next, then Adjust Clips or Edit (the scissors).
- Drag the handles at the start and end of the clip to cut the dead air before you speak and after you finish.
- Slide the playhead to the first stumble or bad line. Tap Split. Slide to where the mistake ends. Tap Split again.
- Tap the piece between the two splits and delete it. Repeat for every mistake.
- If a cut goes wrong, tap undo. Async notes undo and redo are available in the editor.
- Preview the whole video at least twice before you post. Hollyland recommends this.
A spoken "Clip 2" slate or a retake at the start of a take comes out the same way: split before it, split after it, delete.
Why trimming one long take is slow
Buffer's author films in one long sequence and then splits out the pauses. That is the usual talking-head method, and it costs two Splits and one delete for every flaw. A take with six pauses, two "ums" and one full retake means about nine separate cuts, each needing you to scrub the timeline and find the right frame.
Worked example: what trimming costs a TikTok Shop affiliate
Start with your schedule. Three product videos a day, five days a week, is 15 raw takes a week.
Now time one real take. Count from opening the editor to a clean cut. No source publishes a typical trim time, so the minutes below are assumptions. Replace them with your own number.
| Assumed minutes to trim one take | Takes per week | Minutes per week | Hours per week |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 15 | 45 | 0.75 |
| 5 | 15 | 75 | 1.25 |
| 8 | 15 | 120 | 2 |
| 12 | 15 | 180 | 3 |
The formula is 15 × your minutes per take.
Next, the commission side. Hamster Garage (updated Jun 9, 2026, fetched 2026-10-22) is a third-party benchmark, so treat its figures as a guide and check the rate on each product. It says sellers set commissions between 1% and 80%, the US average is 13.02%, and Open Collaboration is typically 10–15%.
| Rate | Commission on one $30 sale |
|---|---|
| 10% | $3.00 |
| 13.02% (US average) | about $3.90 |
| 15% | $4.50 |
Rates vary by product, and none of this promises you will earn anything. Commission is (revenue − refunds) × rate. Hamster Garage says payout comes about 15 days after delivery, or up to 31 days for newer sellers, and returns inside that window are clawed back. Ten sales of the $30 product at 13.02% would pay about $39.06. If two of them are returned, that drops to about $31.25.
Put your own row next to those figures. At 8 minutes a take, you spend 2 hours a week trimming before you film, caption or post anything.
If that number looks too high, upload a raw take and get the first clip cut free, no card.
Add text and captions in TikTok
This part stays in TikTok or your own editing app. The site's editor does not add captions, music, b-roll, effects or transitions.
- Text: tap Text on the edit screen, type your line, and set how long it stays on screen.
- Captions: tap Captions and TikTok transcribes your speech. Hollyland says to review the result, because proper nouns, slang and fast speech often come out wrong.
- Music: Hollyland suggests setting music to about 10–20% volume under a talking head so your voice stays clear. Buffer says business accounts should use sounds marked "Approved for business use" or royalty-free music.
For multi-track timelines, keyframes and templates, Hollyland points to CapCut. For a comparison of other options for talking-head product videos, see CapCut alternative for TikTok Shop videos.
Format and length
- Vertical: Hollyland says TikTok formats uploads as 9:16 vertical, so horizontal footage shows black bars. Crop or reframe it first. Buffer notes TikTok now also accepts landscape uploads.
- Quality: Hollyland says to export at 1080p or higher and upload over Wi-Fi to limit compression. Sprout Social says camera-roll uploads go up to 1080p.
- Length: Pictory and Buffer say TikTok allows 15 seconds up to 10 minutes. Hollyland calls 15–60 seconds the sweet spot. For more on limits, see how long can a TikTok video be.
- Hook: Buffer and Async advise hooking viewers in the first 2–3 seconds. Treat that as each source's advice. I did not check it against a TikTok rule.
Before you post
- Preview twice.
- Pick a cover frame. Buffer says the cover can't be changed after posting.
- Write the caption and hashtags.
- Set audience and privacy.
- Tap Post, or save to Drafts.
You cannot edit a TikTok's video after posting. Hollyland, Sprout Social and Buffer all say you have to delete and repost. Sprout says the description can still be edited. Save to Drafts first and give the video one more look the next time you open the app.
What each tool does in this workflow
| Job | Where you do it |
|---|---|
| Trim start and end, split and delete mistakes | TikTok's editor, by hand |
| Cut pauses, filler words, retakes and spoken "Clip N" slates from a raw take | By hand in TikTok's editor, or this site's editor |
| Text, captions, music, effects, transitions | TikTok or your own editing app. The editor does not add captions, music, b-roll, effects or transitions. |
| Vertical 9:16 output | TikTok's editor, or this site's editor, which returns 1080×1920 with sound in sync |
| Cover, caption, hashtags, privacy, posting | TikTok |
This site's editor takes one raw take from your camera roll or computer, up to 5 minutes and 2 GB, and cuts pauses, filler words such as "um", retakes and spoken "Clip N" slates. Every clip is checked before it is delivered. Uploaded videos are deleted 7 days after upload and finished clips 30 days after they are made, so download your clips. You sign in with Google.
